42: Movie Review

Synopsis:

This is the story of Jackie Robinson (played by Chadwick Boseman: Draft Day, Get On Up), one of the greatest baseball players in American History and the first black man to play in the Major League back when blacks and whites played in separate leagues.

What I Liked:

This is another sports movie about segregation, Jim Crow Laws, and the beginning of integration in sports, but while Remember the Titans was about a high school football team, this one takes place in the Major Leagues in the Brooklyn Dodgers.

The movie was fantastically acted by everyone, especially Chadwick Boseman and Harrison Ford. Chadwick Boseman plays a very strong and likable Jackie Robinson.

Everything about this film is inspiring and feels deeply important.

What I Didn’t Like:

The only small problem I have with the film is that the pacing seems to really change at the end. Throughout the first two thirds of the film, the story took it’s time to develop and depicted the slow progression of the teammates becoming more acceptable of Jackie Robinson, the troubles Robinson had to endure from other teams and fans alike with the teammates and fans slowly sympathizing with him, and his family life. But suddenly, the film’s pacing picks up to almost blazing speeds compared to the rest of the film as if it’s trying to wrap things up as quickly as possible. It is a bit jarring.

Rating:

4 out of 5 stars.
