Ghostbusters: Movie Review

Synopsis:

Three scientists (played by Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Harold Ramis) seek to prove paranormal phenomenon, like ghost. But after being kicked out of the University with no more funding after seeing for themselves a ghost of a dead librarian, they go into business in catching ghosts, hence the Ghost Busters. There are more frequent ghosts of late and they discover that the end of the world might just happen with the coming of an ancient evil deity.

What I Liked:

It is a classic movie that can be very funny, eerily creepy, and visually fantastical when it needs to me.

The acting is great and all the comedians in this film do pretty much the characters they do best. Bill Murray leads the cast of characters with his player charm and charisma as one of the more “normal” of the scientists. Dan Aykroyd plays the nerdy and over excited goofball and Harold plays the dry, monotone scientist. All are likeable and funny in their own ways.

Rick Moranis’s character is one that if played wrong could be very annoying, but if played right, could be funny. Rick Moranis plays it closer to the funny end of the spectrum.

Sigourney Weaver plays more of a damsel in distress character that seems to be immune to Bill Murray “moves” (at the beginning of the film) that we don’t normally get to see since she plays a badass in some of her more famous films (the Alien franchise and Avatar).

While some of the effects are a bit dated (since this is a film made in 1984) it is still nothing that would keep people from watching. It still looks good and the more practical effect (non-CGI effects) still look very good.

The story is unique and different. It is a horror, fantasy, and comedy film all rolled into one film evenly and well thought out. Even the music reflects that. It often times sounds fitting for any of those mentioned genres and always as a haunting or eerie sound deep within the music.

It is a classic film with memorable characters, scenes, and even the way the scenes are shot.

What I Didn’t Like:

The only nit-picky thing I can think of is the times when the music can get very dramatic. Sometimes it works because the scene is worthy of the epic fantasy music, but other times it doesn’t feel as deserving. This is probably only because the scene seemed new or technologically advanced visually at the time making is marvelous to audience, but not as much to the audience of today. This isn’t bad, it just shows how far visual effects and standards have changed over the decades.
